CRAFT WITH PISTA SHELLS

In my earlier presentations,  I had used coconut shells for creations.  In the present creation,  I had used pista shells which should have reached  to the waste bin.  But knowing its shelf life (will not damage over a period),  I thought of using it in my creation.
Items required :
Pista shells
Fevical
Card board
Coloured paper/cloth for contrast.
The coloured paper or cloth ( should not be yellow) should  be pasted on the board. A suitable sketch may be drawn on the surface.  Pick out best pista shells and touch the bottom surface in the fevicol and paste it on the sketched surface. According to the creative ability of yours,  you can paste.  After completely pasting the shells as per the given design,  keep the board aside to dry. You may use different  colours to give a better presentation.  I had not used any colour to keep  its virginity.

You too can do this,  if you have some creativity and patience.
Waste to wealth.  Isn't it?

GANAPATHY in Coconut shell

VINAYAKA  in Coconut Shell -craft

Vinataka/Vikneswara/Ganapathy birth day was just celebrated  as Vinayaka chathurthi. With Ganesha's blessings every thing will be good.  Those who believe in Hinduism, start every work with a pooja to Ganapathy.   In almost all Hindu temples, Vinayaka's presence is noticed.  That is with out Ganapathy,  no one is there.
So I try to offer my skill in the coconut shell craft to Ganesha by producing the Almighty with the coconut shells. I had used tender coconut shell too to have some contrast effect.  I think that I had moved one more step forward in the craft making. Vinayaka Sthuthi in Dr. Kalam's voice is included.    Here the craft is .

KERA NADU KERALA- after flood-COCONUT SHELL CRAFT

Kerala flood made me to create a craft with coconut shells.

It is said that the name Kerala originates from kera (coconut).
As you are aware during 1924 there was a similar flood in Kerala which almost wiped out  every thing.  Almost after around 100 years ,the flood returned with the same fury but with less human loss.  This may be because  of technological advance. This 100 years made me to remember that life of a coconut tree is also around 100 years. It is being said ,now , by some environmenalists that similar flood may occur after around 100 years in Kerala.  You and me will not be here to experience  that.
Life of a coconut tree - period of occurance of flood in Kerala: there seems to be some link. Is n't it ? That is, if a coconut was planted during 1924, Kerala had seen a flood at the end of its life.  So if we plant a coconut now,  it will see a flood at its end of life-that is around 2118.
This flood has created much misery to kerala.  But all keralites united to recreate kerala to bring back its lost glory.

This thought put me to create this craft.   A full grown kera (coconut) tree was uprooted by this flood. That is Kerala has suffered a lot by this flood.  But we have the might to re-come with full energy just like a kera (coconut) sapling which is going to serve as for ever-at  least the next 100 years.

KERALA FLOOD WATER vs SLUDGE GENERATED

The devasting flood that had occured in Kerala ,displaced lakhs of people and damaged vegitation, buildings and the life long house hold savings and of course hundreds of human lives and animals too. Rescue operation is over and now rehabilitation process is going on in war footing. Almost all the houses , buildings and the roads are filled with mud.  The mud/slit is estimated to be thousands of tons. Now cleaning process is going on. Seeing  the visuals,  a foot or so hight  mud is being removed  and washed out.  These  accumulated,  thrown out "waste" is my subject  for discussion.

This is a purely a technical approach which may help the individuals  and the industry and of course the civil administration in managing one part of the waste disposal.

1.Individual: This mud or the slit is good for gardening. It should contain all the neutrients for the plant.  Every house hold may by now generated around 200 to 500 kg of dry equivalent.  This may be heaped in a corner of the house and used as manure for the garden. By doing this civil administration's disposal of these in bulk can be eased.

2.Industry (local ceramic )
The settled slit should be of fine particle size and should have high plasticity.  For the pottery preparation this may be useful.  These industries can buy it from the houses/ local administration thereby some revenue gain can be achieved.

3.Clay industries.
English Indian Clays/ Ashapura mine chem/RRL may use their reputed R and D labs to find out some means  to utilise this slit in a useful ways.  In my opinion (I had worked in R and D),this slit should have high sub micron particles and hence good for paper and paint industries.  To improve the colour proper bleaching methods to be found out by the R and D team.  Hydros/Chorine/ozone may be tried out.  But pure white colour can be achieved on calcination. If R and D comes out with a positive  suggestion, this slit can be purchased by the processing industries.  Thus civil administration can generate  more money.

Waste  becomes wealth.
Disposal burden can be solved.

EASY CLEANING - FAN LEAVES

Easy way to clean the fan leaves....

You can make a simple equipment from your house hold scraps. I had made one which will dedust the leaves and then wipe the leaves.

Required materials:
PVC pipe pieces.
Same size 2 pvc elbows.
Same size 1 pvc Tee.
 bottle cleaning brushes 2 nos.
Some sponge pieces.
Empty water bottle 1 No.
Solvent cement, if necessary.

Take PVC pipe pieces according to the required lengths. Join the pieces as shown in the photo. You may paste it lastly, if required with solvent cement. Make two holes in the left pipe in such a way when the brushes are inserted, these should roll and the nylon bristle should slightly inside the other brush. Two more holes should be made in the right hand side of the pipe. The nylon brushes were inserted parallely in the holes. The sponges are made roller shaped and fixed in the handle portion of the brushes as shown . Tee is to be fixed after positioning the brushes. Then the handle as per the required height. Cut the Water bottle(transparent) lengthwise  one side. Fix this bottle over the Tee by pasting or tieing.

Then insert slowly( to avoid dust falling) one of the fan leaves in between the brushes and move which will de-dust that leaf upside and downside. Repeat this action a couple of times. Then remove the equipment from this and insert the another leaf similarly. Repeat the process in the other leaves too. Take out and throw away the collected dust in the cut bottle (dust holder). Then moist the sponges with soap water and insert the leaves one by one between the sponges. Lastly moist the sponge with good water and sweep again.
Leave the round bottom as such because normally dust will not settle in that portion. If necessary, the bottom portion may be rubbed with moist sponge
Fan is fully cleaned off dust.

AUTO DOOR (BATH ROOM) SWITCH

Auto door (bath room) switch.
As you know , necessity is the mother of invention. This is true in this case too.
Our bath room light is not visible when the door is closed. But the light is visible to my good neighbour. On many occasions, we forgot to switch off that light. My neighbour alert us after 10.30 pm or so-Sometimes next day early morning. Though we were thankful to them, we were ashamed of not switching off after use and troubling my neighbour to alert us, of course without our asking. The result is this auto switch. Though sensor systems are available, cost forced me to develop this simple mechanical device.
      This is basically a electric bell switch and a small piece of metal packing tape. This metal tape should be slightly flexible and strong enough to press.
      Neutral line is connected though this switch to the bulb inside the bath room. This switch is fixed on the top of the door frame in the vinges side. One side of the Metal piece should be slightly bent so that it should press the switch when the door is closed. Insulation tape should be sticked to the bend portion to ease the friction. This metal tape should be nailed in the top of the door in such a way that when the door is closed, the bent portion of the tape just presses the stitch. Fixing the metal tape need to be the skilled work.  Excess pressure on the switch should be nullified by the flexibility of the tape.
See the working of the switch through the video. Loss of memory ( to switch off the switch) is overcomes by this simple device at very low cost.

WATER LEVEL INDICATOR

Water level indicator.

Recently I had experienced an avoidable situation that too to my guest in my house. 

Normally, our water tank full quantity is sufficient for our family.I do have a standby arrangement and we will use that if there is any crisis. But one day my friend and his family arrived at about 2 pm and gone for bath one after another.  My friend as a last person gone for bath .The water in the tank has emptied while my friend is taking bath. With in 5 Mts  water was made available and a bad scenario was avoided.  This made me to install a device to alert the water level at any point of time to my family members. Though electric level indicators available in the market, it will be useless if electricity fails. So  I thought of a mechanical device.
 I took the kitchen as the most frequented place and alert signal was provided for full vision and works round the clock 24*7.
The device consists of 2 pullies, one director, one small bottle (or a floating ball) , a piece of pvc pipe,a pointer and a nylon thread.
The bottom of the bottle is pierced to insert one end of the tread and sealed with m seal. Other end o f the tread is passed through the pullies (number of pullies and positioning depends) and tied to the pointer (few nails packed). The weight of the pointer and the bottle (once capped tightly, air inside will make the bottle float upside down.)need to be balanced. The PVC pipe is used to fix the pullies and for positioning the floating bottle inside the tank.
The pointer is hanging outside the kitchen window  and always in full view. Once the water in the tank comes down, the pointer will rise and goes down if the water level goes up.  This is installed a few months earlier and perfectly working. Two photos are here.
